The Minahassans centered on the provincial capital of Manado, have
a long history of trade with the outside world. The Sangir-Talaud
islands to the north of the mainland form a natural bridge to the
Philippines, traces of whose culture can be found in both language
and religion. It was the Dutch, however, that had the most influential
effect on the development of the area. Apart from introducing a
strong political and religious structure, they also raise coconuts
and nutmeg. Magnificent coral gardens, multitude of tropical marine
reserve and Arakan Wawantulap marine reserve, offer some of the
best diving and snorkeling to be had anywhere in the world. A tremendous
variety of marine-life thrives in these rich waters from sponges
and coral to turtles and dolphins. Northern Sulawesi is the combination
of amazing sights and the underwater sensation.
