Home to diverse and fascinating cultures, it is a land of exciting
travel experiences. Once known around the world as the Celebes,
a Portuguese name meaning 'infamous' because of the alarming number
of ships wrecked off its coral littered coast, Sulawesi's strategic
position has brought it under various spheres of influence.
Effectively linking the Philippines with the Spice Islands, Sulawesi
is just full of an unbelievable diversity of life and grandeur.
Tall, steep mountains give birth to sharp falling rivers which gorge
through lush tropical rain forests and finally end their journey
on a white sand, coconut fringed beach.
The variety of animal and plant life that inhabits these same areas
is wild. As is the fact that between forty and fifty languages are
spoken on the island. Volcanoes dominate the landscape with over
fifty summits effectively separating each of the four petals of
the orchid from each other. Some of them still actively remind the
islanders and the world of their power to create and destroy and
are natural boundaries that have divided the island culturally,
geographically and politically. The people are as fascinating and
beautiful as their island. Whichever destination you choose, be
it the amazing Tanah Toraja, seafaring Bugis Land or the Minahasa
in the northern coast of the island, which will give you the sensation
of Sulawesi.
